Fed’s Logan: Favors a rate hike as inflation is not on a sustainable course

Dallas Fed Pres. Lorie Logan is on the wires explaining her dissent at the FOMC rate decision this week.  She was joined by Fed's Kashkari and Fed's Hammack (all three are regional presidents).  Kashkari and Hammack gave their explanations earlier today. Not surprisingly all 3 are concerned about inflation remaining too high for too long with the risks to the upside.

  • Risks to inflation are to the upside; a "solid" job market is strengthening somewhat.
  • Inflation will likely continue to trend above target unless there is an unanticipated shock.
  • Monetary policy is not restraining the economy, and inflation is not on course to return to the 2% goal.
  • Would have preferred a quarter-point rate increase to better balance the outlook and risks.
  • Modest Fed action in the near term would reduce the likelihood of needing sharper action later.
