Iran foreign ministry spokesperson says no plan for a delegation on talks with the US in the coming days
This all feels like déjà vu, doesn't it?
US president Trump saying that a deal is done but the Iranian camp is denying it. And after some constant back and forth over the coming days/weeks, we eventually arrive at a deal of sorts. But even then, it is one that is not likely to last as we saw with the one signed in June.
Despite what Trump is claiming yesterday, Iran doesn't seem to be entertaining the idea of that at all for now. Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson is out saying that:
- We are currently not holding any talks with the US
- There is no plan to send or receive a delegation on US talks in the coming days
- Talks on the Strait of Hormuz are with Oman
- Working with Oman to establish a temporary safe route along the strait
- New route being discussed will be one path with entry and exit lanes
- Iran-Oman shipping understanding does not mean a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
- A safe shipping route is a necessary condition for reopening but not a sufficient condition
- As long as US naval blockade and military aggression continues, there will be no significant change in the situation in the Strait of Hormuz
Well, so much for hopeful progress in the next few days I guess.
Trump will continue to claim that a deal is done but Iran knows very well that it doesn't mean anything and that the status quo will more or less remain on the Strait of Hormuz. Whatever the case may be, Tehran will retain control of the strait - even if there is a slight increase in traffic. It seems like we will be returning to this playbook again:
As for nuclear talks, that is a whole separate arrangement.
This will serve as a good reminder as any that after the memorandum of understanding was signed at the end of June, there was zero substance in any talks between both sides on nuclear/uranium in the three weeks after. And with Iran continuing to threaten security along the Strait of Hormuz, that eventually led to the breakdown in the ceasefire deal.
In all likelihood, we could just see a repeat of that once again. Iran will be more than happy to try and get things to play out that way.
