US president Trump reaffirms that Iran called a while ago and that they want to make a deal

Trump says that: "The Iranians called us a while ago and informed us that they want to make deal."

Sound familiar? Because that is exactly the same words used when both sides were fighting and trying to strike a compromise for a ceasefire deal before this. And it's also the same kind of rhetoric that Trump sticks with when it comes to fighting any wars, be it the tariffs war and also the trade war with China.

It always starts with both sides fighting and escalating, before Trump proclaiming that the other side is desperate to make a "deal".

Call it a TACO moment but it has always been a signal that he wants to de-escalate. And in the broader sense for markets, that is a good sign I guess.

However, it still does not address the elephant in the room. Can the ceasefire deal and memorandum of understanding continue to be upheld? That especially if Iran continues to threaten security in the Strait of Hormuz and Israel continuing its attacks on Lebanon? And more importantly, how does the US and Iran even work out a compromise on the nuclear/uranium issue? Both sides are still worlds apart on that matter.

So even if we take a step back from recent developments this week, it doesn't mean that a long-term deal is in the offing. Both sides were supposed to have 60 days to figure things out. It's been three weeks already and all there is to show for is more backpedalling and quarelling with no progress whatsoever in sight.
