US, Iran headlines continue to dominate proceedings midway through the week
It looks like war is back on the menu, or is it?
US president Trump said that he believes the ceasefire deal with Iran was "over" yesterday, before saying that he doesn't think that the war will start up again here. At the same time though, he says that "anything that happens will be over quickly". That before the US conducted more strikes against Iran overnight before the latter retaliated with strikes of their own against US bases in the Gulf region again.
But after all that, the latest headlines point to Trump saying that "Iran wants to make a deal". We've seen this all before.
As things escalate to a point where he doesn't want it to, he will just whip out a good old excuse that the other party is the one desperate to concede.
It's already happened once with this conflict and while Iran may deny it at first, both sides eventually worked out a compromise in signing the memorandum of understanding. That being said, it wasn't built to last and here we are again. As mentioned before, we've pretty much just hit the reset button.
All this while, the Strait of Hormuz situation remains in limbo. There is some pick up in terms of traffic flow along the waterway in recent weeks, but nothing to suggest a return to normal whatsoever.
And with the war potentially starting up again, don't expect maritime insurance companies to relax on their premiums. As such, commercial shipping vessels will still not be able to find any comfort and security in traversing the strait. That is even if Iran allows for some added movement, which they are not at the moment.
Oil prices have nudged higher again with WTI crude up another 1% to $74.30 today. After four consecutive weeks of declines, the US-Iran developments this week could be a trigger for a more meaningful rebound into the summer. That especially if negotiations continue to be absent and that the Strait of Hormuz situation remains as it is for longer.
